My name is William-John Hanna and I come from Northern Ireland. I play for the Belfast Junior Giants and also Team Scotland. I have a great coaching team who help me both at home and in Scotland. Without them I would not have grown into the player I am today.
I started playing Ice Hockey in Northern Ireland at a very young age (6). In the early days it was really tough but my club helped through borrowed equipment for me to get me started. It was great fun playing games against other teams and getting to travel on the big boat across to Scotland.
In my first 3 years I really enjoyed playing in the league and had some big tournaments. I was really lucky to win some games, a man of the match award and also the players player of the tournament in the Sam Wallace back in 2019
Over the past number of years I have been fortunate to be coached by Jackson Whistle and have played in over 35 tournaments and 100s of league games.
Its not always about success. I make mistakes, bad decisions and have off days. It's on the training ground where I have to work hard both at Dundonald and over at the Scottish National Training Camp. Working with my coaches and team mates is just the best!
All the effort pays off. In 2022 I was selected to represent Scotland against England and gain my first international caps. What a great win over the 3 Lions.
I picked up 2 All Stars Awards at big Scottish tournaments, a number of player of the match awards, 7 clean sheets (shut outs) but importantly I helped my beloved Belfast Junior Giants to lift the Ensign Ewart Cup in May by saving all the penalties in the sudden death shoot out.
2022/23 has been a memorable season as we finished 4th in the Scottish League (just missing out on 3rd), some great tournaments and the bight headlight was winning Ensign Ewart Cup.... oh yes- saving all the penalties from Fife in the shoot-out! But they are my buddies!
To be continued..............
